Barry H. Richards

Winner of the club championship in 1985 and 1986.

B. H. Richards

By Brian Denman

Barry Richards joined the Hastings CC in the late 1960s. His most successful years were in the 1980s, though he played consistently for the club for about 20 years. His forte seems to have been the end game as Frank Rhoden, writing in the Hastings and St Leonards Observer of 1.9.1973 described him as ‘Just about the best end-game study specialist in Hastings .’ In 1977 when the Hastings held a short open tournament in the summer Barry was the only player to take any points off the winner Michael Franklin, when he obtained a draw in their individual encounter.

Before the end of the 1970s Barry had become match captain and in the mid 1980s he was appointed as the club’s chairman. In the early 1980s he played a number of games for the Sussex first team and in 1985 won his first club championship, a fitting reward for 16 years of loyal service to the club. In 1986 he repeated this success and in 1989 he was still a member of the club. Perhaps someone in the club will know what happened to him.

Barry died whilst out running Brian. From memory he simply collapsed.

It would have been early to mid 1990’s.

Robin [Moss]

While his running may have affected his heart condition Richard Almond recalls that he died while on a family outing. I have revised the biography to include additional information.

Update 15 April 2013: Brian Denman writes: His second Christian name was Hugh and he was born in Hastings on 5.1.1948. He died in November 1995 (aged 47).

Yes,he collapsed whilst out jogging as unfortunately can happen without warning to even the fittest people. He ran marathons and once competed in the London Marathon (He brought his medal into the club to show us.His death was of similar shock to the club as that of Richard Almond. He was always laughing and giggling with us teenagers. He was a good friend of Arthur Windsor and gave him lifts to and from the club.A strong player but very modest, almost apologetic when he won
