Southern Counties Chess Union 125th anniversary

Dear all,

This year is the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Southern Counties Chess Union Southern Counties Chess Union – what I’m reliably informed is our quasquicentenary.  We are pushing the boat out to celebrate.  Firstly, we entered a team in the World Senior Teams Championship in Crete earlier this year, more out of enjoyment than expectation!  (Our exploits can be read at . Scroll down the page a bit.)  Secondly, we are holding a multi-board North vs South (of the river) match on Saturday 16th September.  I attach details and would be grateful if you could give this as much publicity as possible amongst your clubs, county teams, on websites etc.  I hope Sussex will be strongly represented in what should be a memorable occasion.

Like me, you’ll probably be surprised just how far the SCCU has reached over the last 125 years, and we are inviting players from any County that has been affiliated to the Union at any time, not just at present.  The match is open to all ages and playing strengths.  We particularly hope to have a strong entry from juniors, who will be able to look back on the event fondly for many decades to come.  Besides, it will fall to them to organise sequels in 25 years, 50 years …. !

We’ve not yet put a limit on the number of boards.  We are hoping for at least 125 players, hopefully at least 125 boards and should be able to accommodate 200 boards.

You will appreciate that a lot of effort is going into organising such an event, so please do all you can to support it – including entering.  It is unfortunate, I appreciate, from the Sussex perspective that the date clashes with the Crowborough Congress.  The chess calendar is so crowded these days that avoiding all clashes is just about impossible.
