To confirm the result from Tuesday night, after the results of the two adjudicated games have been agreed, the match between Lewes 2 and Hastings 3 is a draw:
A very close match. Jim had a tight tussle where no side gained an advantage, and agreed a draw with an hour or so to go. Marc lost a close, sharp battle, where both sides had to find “only one move is a good move” time and time again. One slip and Duncan turned the game into his favour. The other 3 games went to the 3 hour mark. Mason turned down a draw because of the match position and pressed for a win, but in the final analysis he fell short (later confirmed by Fritz). Chris’s opponent resigned at the close in an obviously lost position. I faced an Albin in which my opponent pressed for 15 moves but failed to develop his pieces. I held the position and converted the developmental advantage into initiative for the remainder of the game. At the close, I was 3 pawns against 2 in an opposite coloured bishop endgame, with 2 well advanced connected passed pawns and good king position. The win looked obvious, confirmed by Fritz. Opposite coloured bishop endgames are NOT automatically drawn: the side with the initiative usually has a decisive winning advantage. Many thanks to the team for their efforts, as we were out graded by an average of 6 pts on each board, so a drawn match was an excellent result.
