After Saturday’s match against a strong Brighton 1 side our match against Horsham 2 should have presented a somewhat easier proposition as we out-graded our opponents by an average 28 points a board. Proceedings did not start well when I misplayed the opening and was happy to repeat in an already slightly inferior position. Francis won quickly when his opponent went astray having played a dangerous gambit line. Nicolas equalised well after an indifferent opening and then outplayed his opponent in a probably drawn position to record another win. However the other two games were not looking so good. John had allowed his opponent to win a pawn with a small combination and although he was the last to finish he was eventually unable to hold a lost knight and pawn ending. Brendan had the most interesting game of the evening night having sacrificed an exchange for a pawn to obtain the two bishops and dangerous attacking chances. Nevertheless his opponent had his own threats and, having defended accurately, was eventually able to force the exchange of queens and win the subsequent rook v bishop ending.
So a disappointing match ended in a draw, a result which did not flatter our opponents on the night.
